The College Lacrosse Recruiting Roadmap
1. Freshman-Sophomore Year (Foundation Phase)
This stage is about building your profile, not chasing offers.
Academics First
- GPA matters more than most athletes think—especially for NCAA Division III schools
- Take challenging courses early (Honors/AP when appropriate)
Skill Development
- Play club lacrosse (high-exposure teams help)
- Attend individual player showcases
Start Your Academics First
- Create a highlight video (even basic is fine early)
- Set up an email + recruiting profile
Family Mindset
- Focus on development over hype
- Understand that recruiting timelines vary by division
2. Summer Before Your Junior Year (Exposure Phase Begins)
This is when recruiting starts to become real.
Showcase + Tournament Strategy
- Attend 2–4 targeted events (not 10 random ones)
- Prioritize events where college coaches are actually attending
Film Matters More Now
- 3–5 minute highlight video
- Include: dodging, IQ, defense, transition, off-ball play
Start Coach Outreach
Email coaches with:
- Intro + grad year + position
- GPA/test scores
- Film link
- Upcoming schedule
3. Junior Year (Evaluation + Communication Phase)
This is the most important recruiting year.
Consistent Communication
- Email coaches every 4–6 weeks with updates
- Respond quickly to any replies
Unofficial Visits
- Visit campuses, meet coaches (on your own dime)
- Watch practices/games if possible
Understand NCAA Rules
- D1 contact rules are stricter than D2/D3
- Recruiting calendars matter (especially in NCAA guidelines)
Academic Alignment
- Start identifying realistic schools based on GPA + test scores
- Use pre-reads where applicable (especially for D3)
4. Summer After Junior Year (Decision Window)
This is when many offers happen—especially D1/D2.
Key Actions:
- Attend high-exposure showcases (e.g., D2/D3-specific events)
- Narrow your school list
- Have honest conversations with coaches about:
- Where you stand on their list
- Timeline for decisions
Important
- Not all offers are equal (roster spot vs scholarship vs preferred walk-on)
5. Senior Year (Commitment + Admissions Phase)
Finalize Your = Decision
- Commit (verbally or officially, depending on division)
Admissions Process
- Complete applications early
- Work with coaches on admissions support (especially at D3 schools)
Admissions Stay Eligible
- Keep grades up
- Avoid disciplinary issues
